Secure E-mail from off-campus -part 2
As you may have read in UNI Online, or in a personal email received on one of the last Monday mornings - UNI ITS Network Services is planning to tighten security on the mail server. This will require users from off-campus (your campus office will not be affected) to use encryption to protect their password and username.
At this time CHFA|TECH cannot provide additional assistance to users at their home (our main responsibility is to ensure the timely functioning of our computers on-campus). We suggest you contact ITS User Services or review their web page on how to configure your home computer, or hire someone off-campus to assist you in making the changes.

Subject: Non-encrypted e-mail access from off-campus
> At sometime in the past week, you accessed your UNI email account from an
> off-campus site. This access was not encrypted (scrambled code). A simple
> change is available that will encrypt your access, helping to protect both
> you and the university. You will need to modify your access method soon
> because unencrypted access will be denied in the near future.
>
> Encrypting your email account is an extremely important step that you must
> initiate to provide security to your account. Follow the documentation for
> your email client package at:

>
> Actual screens from your version of the software may vary slightly but the
> responses should be similar. Keep in mind that the first time you access
> your account after turning on this capability you will also have to answer
> appropriately to grant a few security certificate questions.
>
> If you are not currently using "mail.uni.edu" as your mail server name
> (both inbound and outbound) you need change to this name. Documentation on

Secure E-mail from off-campus
Several CHFA staff members have questions about the notice in today's UNI Online regarding off-campus e-mail.
No deadline for these changes has been set by ITS Network Services - so there is no need to panic. Ken Connelly promised at the campus System Administrators meeting yesterday that notice of this change will happen long before you are forced to change your home computer to use encryption.
Again, you are encouraged to read the instructions on ITS User Service's web page and make changes to your home machine at your earliest convenience - but you are not required to at this time. At no time will you need to make these changes to your office machine.

CHFA will provide additional information on our web site in the future on how you can make changes to your home computer:
