CHFA|TECH is happy to announce that you likely have one less password to remember now. As of now - all Macintosh computers in labs and in classrooms (save CAC109 and CAC110 that are new AV Cart Classrooms) now use the Windows Active Directory for username and password management.
If you already have a Windows account (most likely you have a Windows 2000 or XP machine in your office) - you can use your same username and password to login to public Macintosh in CHFA.
At this time you have two document storage locations if you have a CHFA user account - One on a Windows server (Pluto for Students, Mercury for faculty and staff) and a Second one on a Macintosh server (Apollo for everyone). Once final testing is completed, we will offer to move faculty and staff documents to the Macintosh server - so you can access the same data easily from either platform. All Student documents will likely move to the Macintosh. This will be accomplished with a redirect order to your Windows user account to "look" at the Macintosh server rather than the Windows server.
For now - When you are at a Windows machine - you just click on your My Documents folder - this folder resides on a Windows server. When you are at a Macintosh machine - your Home-Documents folder is located on the Macintosh server.
You can open your Windows server documents from a Macintosh by doing the following. Go to the finder (Mac Face in the lower left of the screen) - click the finder icon - go to the Go pulldown menu - choose Connect To server. In the address line type SMB://MERCURY (if you are Faculty or Staff - SMB://PLUTO if you are a student) - then click the Connect Button. On the SMB Filesystem Authentication you should only need to enter your password then click OK. On the SMB Mount page choose "Documents" for Faculty and Staff or "Studentdocuments" for Students. Click OK. You will then have a DOCUMENTS (or STUDENTDOCUMENTS) icon on the desktop and in the Finder. Double-click then scroll down to find your user folder (you will not have access rights for anyone else but your own).
That's it - you can open/change/delete any Windows Server document from the Macintosh now. Be sure to log off from the Macintosh when you are done (Apple, Shift and Q buttons).
More to come soon on documents....
