Microsoft Security Update 5PM- Please leave Windows machines powered ON
Microsoft has announced a further vulnerability - similar to the one exploited by the MS Blaster and Welchia worms of August.
CHFA will restart ALL Windows file servers, print, and domain controllers shortly after 5PM today (Wednesday) to apply the fix. Your My Documents, Public Files, and Roaming user profiles (you will get an error logging in or logging off), and networked printers will be unavailable during the five minute period when each file server restarts.
As always we beg that you leave any office computer on at night, so we can apply these patches automatically overnight. Simply log off from Windows 2000 or XP when you leave your office by clicking start then log off. Do not shut the machine down - we lack the time and permission to go around to locked offices and turn machines on to apply this security fix.
Computers that go unpatched risk infection - and will be removed from the network to prevent disruption to the rest of the University if the need arises.
If you have a Windows computer at home you will want to read this bulletin from Microsoft and ensure that your personal machine is updated as soon as possible:
