Thunderbird Mail Program available to CHFA Windows computers
Thunderbird is the open-source prodigy of the Netscape Messenger mail program. While CHFA|TECH still prefers Outlook Express for Windows 2000 and Windows XP - due to the number of people requesting to use the obsolete and often flaky Netcape Messenger application - we suggest they switch to the updated Thunderbird 0.4 E-mail client.
This application will install automatically to Windows 2000 and XP machines in CHFA upon the next reboot (after 4pm Saturday 1/10/04). You can launch the program by clicking Start -> All Programs (Programs on Windows 2000)-> Thunderbird Mail 0.4
We will help configure this program ONLY when setting up new computers for faculty and staff or as time permits. CHFA|TECH cannot help you configure this program during the start of the semester. We suggest you continue to use your existing mail application if you are not confident of your ability to set it up yourself, and wait until later in the semester to request assistance from CHFA|TECH.
We have instructions on setting up Thunderbird to use the UNI Email server (The VMS server, known as ACAD, StaffIMAP, or just mail.uni.edu) on this web page: Setting up Thunderbird for UNI e-mail. Again, these instructions require some time to complete, and should not be "jumped into" without considering the consequences of not having a working e-mail program on your computer.
