Symantec AntiVirus upgrade for Windows - Outlook issue

Symantec AntiVirus 10.1 is installing on CHFA Windows XP computers as they restart. This version adds several new ways to prevent malicious applications from running on protected computers.

Unfortunately this causes errors with Microsoft Outlook, as once again the plug-in has changed.

There is a single file to remove that fixes this issue: simply delete C:\Documents and Settings\%Username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\extend.dat

Symantec AntiVirus upgrade for Windows - Outlook issue

Symantec AntiVirus 10 on CHFA Windows XP computers was patched to 10.0.2.2001 in the last week. We have received sporadic reports of this again causing problems with Outlook. The solution is again to remove the temporary file named extend.dat

Symantec AntiVirus upgrade for Windows - Outlook issue

Version 9 of Symantec AntiVirus locates this plugin in a different location than version 8 - so the exact error message today is:
Unable to load "C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\vpmsece.dll"

Symantec AntiVirus upgrade for Windows - Outlook issue

We have upgraded Symantec AntiVirus to version 9 on all CHFA Windows servers. We are in the process of upgrading Norton AntiVirus 7 and Symantec AntiVirus 8 to version 9 on all Windows 2000 and XP machines in CHFA in May.

If you use Microsoft Outlook for email (not Outlook Express) - the new version of AntiVirus will produce a small annoying error: each time you open an email message you will be prompted with an error similar to:
"The add-in 'C:\Program Files\NavNT\vpmsece.dll' could not be installed or loaded. This problem may be resolved by using Detect and Repair on the Help menu. Unable to load "C:\Program Files\NavNT\vpmsece.dll". You may be out of memory, out of system resources, or missing a .dll file."

There is a single file to remove that fixes this issue (Outlook is attempting to use the old location for the previous version of Symantec/Norton AntiVirus).
The file to delete is C:\Documents and Settings\%Username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\extend.dat

More information is available from Symantec
